Know About Converting Civil Union Certificate into Marriage Certificate in Connecticut

Whether you are planning to get married or getting into a civil union agreement in Connecticut, the first thing you should do is to hire a Connecticut marriage officiant. He can advise you in obtaining a civil union certificate from the vital record office in the town where the union was held. However, as of today, couples can no longer enter into civil unions in Connecticut.

Current Rules Regarding Civil Union in Connecticut

On October 1, 2005, Connecticut’s civil union laws were enacted. According to the law, a same-sex couple can enter into a legal union. The couple will be provided the same protection, benefits, and responsibilities under state law as those granted by marriage. After the legalization of same-sex marriage in Connecticut, the civil union laws were revoked on October 1, 2010.

Couples can no longer enter civil unions in Connecticut. As of today, all existing civil unions have converted to marriage, except in the case the couples have filed a petition of dissolution, annulment, or legal separation before October 1, 2010.

If the civil union ceremony was performed between October 1, 2005, and September 30, 2010, the individuals can request a copy of a civil union certificate. He will receive the following conversation statement:

“The persons named on this certificate entered into a civil union on the date recorded. In accordance with C.G.S. §46B-38rr, all civil unions converted to marriages on October 1, 2010, except those that were dissolved, or had dissolution, annulment, or legal separation proceedings pending on October 1, 2010.”

Besides, the parties to the civil union can request that the civil union certificate be converted to a marriage certificate.

Method to Convert a Civil Union Certificate to a Marriage Certificate

Only those who are the parties to the civil union can request the conversion of a civil union certificate to a marriage certificate. In this case, the civil union must have been in effect on October 01, 2010. Also, please note that the civil unions that were dissolved or are in the process of being dissolved on October 01, 2010, cannot be converted into a marriage.

For converting the civil union certificate to a marriage certificate, at least one party to the civil union has to affirm that the civil union was not dissolved, nor pending dissolution, on October 1, 2010. One must complete the Conversion Request Form and submit it to the vital records office of the town where the civil union took place.
